For those of you who know me, you’ll know that I love dungeon crawlers and I love Descent: Journeys in the Dark. However, there’s now a new Descent in town, Legends of the Dark. The excitement for this game started as soon as the game was announced, and only continued to grow as time passed and the countdown to release began. So, did it live up to my [very high] expectations? In a word, yes. Yes it did. In fact, it gave me a renewed love of Terrinoth which is the world setting of the game. Is it just a repeat of Journeys in the Dark? No. As much as I love Journeys in the Dark the difference between that and the new Legends of the Dark could be described as something similar to playing a game you love on your phone, and then playing the new one on a 70” TV in 4K. Yes, it’s really that good! I don’t want to give away any spoilers here, so let me just say that this fully immersive game will take you out of the stressful world we’re living in and transport you to Terrinoth where you’ll be the hero or the story for a couple of hours and walk away with tales that would make any adventurer proud.
What is Descent: Legends of the Dark?
Descent: Legends of the Dark is an app assisted dungeon crawler game for 1-4 players. With plenty of 3D terrain, you can interact with objects such as bookcases, tables, trees, treasure chests, etc., as well as move to different levels of the map and experience elevation rules. Set in the well-developed world of Terrinoth you’ll explore areas of the map as you go on adventures, and return to the city to buy and sell items, as well as craft new weapons and potions in preparation for your next adventure.
Is it compatible with Descent Journeys in the Dark 2nd Edition?
No. Descent: Legends of the Dark is not an expansion for Journeys in the dark, nor is it a Descent 3rd edition. This is a brand-new standalone game. Legends of the Dark has different game rules, and the miniatures are larger than the Journeys in the Dark miniatures (and the quality of the miniatures has also improved greatly!). It’s set in the same world you know and love, so you’ll feel at home right away.
Do I need to have played Descent: Journeys in the Dark to play this game?
No. This is a standalone game, separate to and not compatible with Journeys in the Dark.

Descent: Legends of the Dark is incredibly immersive. With this board game, you’re not just given a character and left to get on with it. You’ll very quickly get to know your character, their personality, what makes them tick, and you’ll love them all the more for it. If you enjoy dungeon crawlers and you’re looking for a fully immersive narrative play experience, then this game has it all. It looks beautiful when laid out on the table, the miniatures are just stunning, and the app does an absolutely wonderful job at not only guiding you through the story and keeping track of your inventory etc., but showing you the world you’re travelling through and introducing you to the eclectic personalities of the people you’ll meet along the way.
