A Beginner’s Guide to Arkham Horror: The Card Game

Strange things are happening in Arkham.

Behind the quiet streets and historic buildings, something far darker is stirring. Cults whisper in hidden rooms, unnatural creatures roam the night, and ancient forces beyond human understanding push ever closer to our world. Most people carry on with their daily lives, unaware of the danger growing around them. A few, however, refuse to look away.

These investigators dig into forbidden knowledge, chase down monsters, and risk their sanity to protect Arkham from the horrors of the Mythos.

If you’re curious about Arkham Horror: The Card Game, you might be wondering how to get started. Maybe you’ve heard people say it’s one of the best narrative card games out there, but the deckbuilding and campaign system seem intimidating to you.

The good news? Getting started is much easier than you might think.

What You Need to Start Playing

To begin your investigation, all you need is the Arkham Horror: The Card Game Core Set.

Inside the box you’ll find:

  • Five playable investigators
  • A collection of player cards used to build decks
  • A short three-scenario campaign
  • Pre-built starter decks so you can jump straight into the game

Those pre-built decks are perfect for learning the rules and getting your first experience with the game. However, one of the most exciting aspects of Arkham Horror is deckbuilding.

Each investigator has access to certain card types and classes, but within those limits players have a lot of freedom. Players could choose the same investigator and build completely different decks depending on their playstyle. For example, one player might build a character to protect their teammates and absorb damage, while another might turn that same investigator into a reckless monster hunter. That flexibility is what gives Arkham Horror so much replay value. Even the small campaign included in the core set can feel very different depending on which investigators and decks you bring.

The Three Core Challenges of Arkham Horror

Every scenario in Arkham Horror revolves around three major challenges. Understanding these will help you build better decks and play more effectively.

1. Dealing With Enemies

The Mythos is full of creatures that want to tear investigators apart.

Enemies can appear unexpectedly during a scenario and, if left unchecked, they will attack investigators every round. Even a relatively weak monster can become dangerous if the team ignores it for too long.

Players have two main ways to handle enemies:

Fight them – attacking and dealing damage until the creature is defeated.

Evade them – temporarily slipping away so the enemy cannot attack that round.

Some enemies simply block your path, while others actively hunt investigators across the map, forcing the team to deal with them sooner or later. Managing threats like these is often the job of the team’s combat specialist.

2. Surviving the Mythos

Combat isn’t the only danger investigators face. During the Mythos phase, each player draws encounter cards that represent the supernatural forces working against them. These cards can cause damage, inflict mental trauma, or create ongoing problems that must be dealt with before things spiral out of control.

Some effects happen immediately, forcing investigators to pass skill tests or suffer consequences. Others linger on the table, creating complications that persist across multiple turns. This constant pressure means every investigator needs some way to stay alive—whether that’s through allies who can absorb damage, cards that cancel dangerous effects, or simply clever play.

3. Discovering Clues

While enemies and treacheries threaten investigators, clues are how you actually win scenarios. Most scenarios require players to gather clues from locations in order to advance the story and progress through the act deck. The faster you collect them, the quicker you can move the narrative forward.

Locations usually have a shroud value, which determines how difficult it is to investigate there. Some places also introduce special effects that make investigating more complicated. Because of this, every team needs at least one investigator who excels at uncovering clues. Fail to gather them quickly enough, and the agenda deck will advance—often making the situation far more dangerous.

Why Balance Matters

A group that focuses only on combat will struggle to uncover clues. A team dedicated solely to investigating might be overwhelmed by enemies. And investigators who cannot protect themselves may fall to the Mythos before accomplishing anything at all.

Success in Arkham Horror usually comes from balancing all three challenges:

defeating enemies, surviving the horrors of the encounter deck, and uncovering clues before time runs out.

The Five Investigator Classes

Investigators in Arkham Horror belong to one of five classes, each with its own playstyle and strengths.

Guardian

Guardians are the protectors of the group. They specialise in combat and are usually the ones standing between the team and the monsters trying to kill them.

They’re great at defeating enemies and protecting allies, but they sometimes struggle with resources or clue gathering.

Seeker

Seekers are the investigators who uncover the truth.

They excel at discovering clues and advancing the story quickly. With the right tools they can gather information faster than any other class.

However, they’re usually less capable in combat and often rely on teammates to deal with dangerous enemies.

Rogue

Rogues thrive on speed, agility, and clever tricks.

They often generate extra resources, move around the map quickly, and avoid threats rather than confronting them directly. Rogues can be extremely powerful when things go well—but their risky playstyle sometimes leaves them vulnerable.

Mystic

Mystics wield supernatural power.

Their spells allow them to fight monsters, discover clues, or manipulate fate itself. The catch is that this power often comes with a cost. Many mystic abilities carry risks that can harm the investigator if things go wrong.

A skilled Mystic learns when that risk is worth taking.

Survivor

Survivors represent ordinary people who refuse to give up.

They specialise in resilience and adaptability, often turning failure into success or recovering from disasters that would defeat other investigators.

Survivors might not always have the most powerful tools, but their ability to endure makes them incredibly valuable.

Understanding Deckbuilding Roles

When building a deck, it helps to think about the role your investigator will play within the group.

Most investigators fall into one of four categories:

  • Fighter – focuses on defeating enemies
  • Clue Finder – specialises in investigating and gathering clues
  • Flex – capable of both fighting and investigating
  • Support – helps the team survive and perform better

While investigators naturally lean toward certain roles, they are rarely locked into them completely. Many decks include tools outside their main specialty so they can respond to unexpected problems.

The Importance of Deck Economy

One concept new players sometimes overlook is deck economy. In simple terms, this means making sure your deck can:

  • Draw enough cards
  • Generate enough resources to play them

A deck filled with powerful cards is useless if you cannot afford to play them. Including cards that provide resources or additional card draw helps keep your deck running smoothly. Balancing these elements is just as important as choosing the right weapons or investigation tools.

Starting With Prebuilt Decks

If deckbuilding sounds intimidating, don’t worry. The prebuilt decks included in the core set are a great way to learn the game. They allow you to focus on understanding the rules and the flow of a scenario before experimenting with your own builds. After a few games, you’ll likely start noticing cards you wish you had drawn—or strategies you want to try. That’s when deckbuilding really becomes fun.

Your Investigation Begins

Arkham Horror: The Card Game is full of memorable stories, difficult choices, and tense moments where everything hangs on a single card draw.

The core set is the perfect starting point. As you play through its campaign, you’ll learn how investigators work together, how the Mythos fights back, and how deckbuilding can change the outcome of a scenario.

At first, the horrors of Arkham may seem overwhelming. But with experience—and a little courage—you might just discover that you’re capable of saving the city from the darkness lurking beneath it.

Upgrade Your Arkham Horror Experience

Once you’ve played a few scenarios, you may find yourself wanting to enhance your table setup. Arkham Horror: The Card Game is a campaign experience you’ll return to again and again, and the right accessories can make each session smoother and more immersive.

Many players like to protect their investigator and player cards with themed card sleeves, which not only keep your cards safe but also add a bit of visual flair to your deck. Since Arkham Horror campaigns involve a lot of shuffling and handling, sleeves can quickly become an essential upgrade.

If you want to keep your investigator deck organised between sessions, deck tomes are another popular choice. These make it easy to store your deck, campaign notes, and upgrades together so everything is ready for the next scenario.

For the tabletop itself, Arkham Horror playmats can help define play areas and give your game a dramatic, thematic backdrop. They also make handling cards easier and protect your table during long sessions.

Finally, many players enjoy replacing the cardboard tokens from the core set with acrylic tokens for resources, clues, and damage. These are easier to handle, more durable, and add a premium feel to the game.

If you’re looking to upgrade your setup, we stock a range of Arkham Horror accessories including sleeves, deck tomes, playmats, and acrylic tokens to help you get the most out of your investigations, including the premium storage solution Arkham Horror Game Night Chest to keep everything together in one place.

After all, when you’re facing the horrors of the Mythos, it helps to have the right tools at hand.
